Superintendent Jim Schlachter to retire at end of school year

Gresham-Barlow School Superintendent Jim Schlachter announced at the December 1 regular school board meeting that he plans to retire from the school district at the end of June.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to lead the district as superintendent over the last seven years,” said Superintendent Jim Schlachter. “The many educators, students, and community members who I have been able to get to know and work with have made my 20 years working for the Gresham-Barlow School District an exceptional experience.”

In his announcement, Superintendent Schlachter commended the district’s school board and dedicated administrators for establishing a record of excellent leadership.

“The district’s prospects for the future are very bright when you consider our many achievements,” said Schlachter. “The educational outcomes of our students are on the upswing, the recently passed school bond will provide for our facility needs, and we have a long list of community partnerships that support our quality educational program.”

Superintendent Schlachter has served as superintendent of the Gresham-Barlow School District since 2010. Prior to that, he served as assistant superintendent and was responsible for guiding the district’s various learning initiatives and overseeing its five middle schools and three high schools. During his career in education he has worked as a principal, assistant principal, and has taught science at the middle and high school levels. He has worked as an adjunct professor at Concordia University-Portland and serves on numerous boards dedicated to ensuring educational success for every child.

Superintendent Schlachter shared that he announced his retirement at this point in the school year to allow the school board time to determine a plan for identifying the next superintendent. Schlachter’s last day with the district will be June 30, 2017.
