Gresham-Barlow School Board District selects Koch for student support services executive director position

Gresham High School principal to begin work in new position July 1

The Gresham-Barlow School District announced today that Gresham High School (GHS) Principal John Koch has been selected to be the district’s next executive director of student support services. He will replace Janell Black who will retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

Koch has served as Gresham High School’s principal for the last six years. During his tenure the school’s graduation rate increased by 18% over five years time.

“John Koch has demonstrated the ability to lead and get results by bringing people together around a common purpose,” said Superintendent Jim Schlachter. “His six years of leading Gresham High School has prepared him well for this district-level administrative role.”

Before becoming principal of Gresham High School, Koch served as principal of Clear Creek Middle School for seven years. In 2008 Koch was named Oregon Middle School Principal of the Year by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators. Before becoming principal of Clear Creek Middle School in 2003, Koch served as principal of West Orient Middle School for three years. Prior to that he served as an assistant principal at the school. Before becoming an administrator, Koch taught special education first at the elementary school level and later at the high school level.

“I started my career as a special education teacher,” said Koch. “I have a heart for students with challenges. This position is a great opportunity to apply my leadership experiences to a program that impacts many students district-wide in a positive way.”

Koch will become executive director of student support services on July 1. During the next several weeks, a process will be put in place to select Gresham High School’s next principal. The selection process will include the involvement of GHS staff and parents.
